Today I want to talk about the power of decisive decision making.
What is “maybe”? It’s a no.
There is “yes” or “no.”
The answer “no” has variants or flavors like…”no, absolutely not” or “no, no thank you” or “not right now” or “I need time to decide if I want to change to a yes” or “no, but I don’t want to be honest with either of us that it’s not ‘yes’”…etc.
No. Or yes.
Like Yoda said, “Do or do not, there is no try.”
Yes or not yes, there is no maybe, later, perhaps…
I have decided to make my decision making decisive, and I encourage it for everyone, honestly.
I feel passionately that decisions are either “yes” or “no” – nothing else. I’m a person who loves middle spaces, the shades of gray, yet in this area of my life I choose a side definitively.
As you face the beginning of the year 2022, I encourage you to look at your decision making.
How often do you say some version of “no” that sounds like:
“Maybe…I need to think about it.” (Just say “no.” If you change your mind later, revisit the decision.)
“I’ll start this new behavior on…Monday. Right. On Monday.” (Just know that you’re telling yourself “no” to the habit change. You are saying “no” to the new habit today.)
“I need to do more research before deciding.” (This is a “no.” You are saying that the answer is no unless something outside of you changes your mind.)
A definitive “no” or “yes” answer will change how you see yourself.
It’s a beautiful way to stay whole, to be in integrity to yourself.
Here’s my simple decision making process:
- When faced with an option, give a timeframe for deciding. “I will decide on my website hosting provider by Tuesday, January 9th.”
- Limit the inputs reviewed as part of the decision research step. “I will review up to 5 hosting companies. No more than 5.”
- Make a firm decision.
- If you must, schedule a time to revisit the decision in the future, perhaps in X weeks or months. In this example, I might put a reminder on the calendar to revisit the hosting provider decision 90 days prior to renewal.
I strongly encourage you to make decisive, bold, future-oriented decisions.
Decide.
Move on.
The more you practice facing a choice, pressing the “yes” or “no” button and moving forward, the better trust you will have that you can answer.
Trusting yourself to make a firm decision is a BOSS MOVE.
It’s powerful.
It sends a signal to yourself.
Any form of “maybe” including “not now,” “more research,” “I don’t want to disappoint anyone…” can erode trust in yourself.
Dreams are built one mighty, decisive action after another.
My greatest wish for you in 2022 is to practice the art of decisive decisions.
It will bring you closer to your heart’s desire.
It will increase your sense of integrity and self-trust.
It will increase the trust others have in you.
What decision have you been putting off?
What would happen if you made it today…right now?
“Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Be bold. Decide.
And may you have a bold, action packed 2022!
